ATP Finals: Russia’s Daniel Medvedev created history, broke theme dream of defeating Djokovic

Russian tennis star Daniel Medvedev won the biggest title of his career on Sunday night. He went on to win 4-6, 7-6 (2), 6-4 in the ATP Finals final over Dominic Theme. With this, Medvedev also broke the dream of becoming the first Austrian to win the Dominic Theme ATP Finals.

Themes were considered strong contenders to win the tournament. He recently won the US Open title. Theme defeated top seed Novak Djokovic in the semi-finals. The theme is third and Medvedev is fourth in the ATP rankings. This is the fifth consecutive year in ATP Finals when the tournament has got a new champion. Prior to this, Andy Murray in 2016, Grigor Dimitrov in 2017, Alexander Zverev in 2018, Stephanos Tsitsipas in 2019 became the first ATP Finals players in their respective careers.

Not only this, Medvedev played seven consecutive matches to win the world’s largest tennis tournament. During this, he defeated the world’s top-10 players. He became the first player to defeat World Number One (Novak Djokovic), World Number 2 (Rafael Nadal) and World Number 3 (Dominic Theme) in the same ATP Finals.

Nikolay Davydenko’s Medvedev became the first Russian player to win the first ATP Finals in London in 2009. He is just the fourth player in ATP history to have defeated the world’s top-3 players in a single tournament. He is the second person in the tennis world to win ATP finals within a year after making a debacle.

Medvedev won the Paris Masters earlier this month. After the victory, Medvedev said, “When you gain that confidence, you have to maintain it. This was the hardest win of my life. Hopefully, I can win more big titles in my career. ‘

Medvedev said, “I think it is unique in tennis. In football, I have seen some players who do not celebrate their goals, so I do not celebrate my victory. This is my point, and I like it. ’Medvedev and Theme first met face to face in Umag, Croatia 10 years ago. Medvedev was just 14 years old then. Medvedev then suffered a 0–2 defeat against the theme.
