The Kerala government has challenged the Centre’s decision to lease the Thiruvananthapuram International Airport to Adani Enterprises in the Supreme Court. Kerala’s Left Front government has filed an appeal in the apex court against the High Court’s decision.

On 19 October the High Court dismissed the petition of the state government, saying that it is against the policy of privatization of the Center and hence there is no merit in it. Requesting an interim stay on the High Court’s decision, the state government, in an appeal filed through advocate CK Sasi, has said that it has handed over the operations, management and development of the airport to Adani Enterprises Ltd., a special private establishment Has challenged the arbitrary and illegal action of the Airports Authority.

The Kerala government had filed a petition in this regard after the all-party meeting. In this meeting, there was a demand to withdraw the decision of the Union Cabinet to hand over the airport to Adani Enterprises on lease. The Center said that the state government could not win the bidding process conducted in a transparent manner for this airport.

Adani Enterprises got management of six airports — Lucknow, Ahmedabad, Jaipur, Mangaluru, Thiruvananthapuram and Guwahati — through the PPP model after a competitive bidding process conducted in February 2019. Kerala State Industrial Development Corporation participated in this bidding process.

It is known that the political dispute had increased when the contract of Trivandrum International Airport in Kerala was awarded to the Adani group. CM Pinarayi Vijayan of Kerala also wrote a letter to PM Narendra Modi in this regard. Subsequently, the assembly of the state passed a resolution against this decision.

The Assembly had passed a resolution against awarding the airport to the Adani group. Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan said that the central government should reconsider its decision.
