Online betting done during India-Australia ODI series? BCCI overcame the case

Online Betting in Ind vs Australia Series: During the live streaming of the three-match ODI series in Australia, two online betting companies ran an advertising campaign. In this, Indian users were allowed to bet online using the Indian banking system. These advertisements were from Malta-registered Betway and Philippines-based Dafabet. These were shown on Sony Live during the live streaming of the series between India and Australia.

Sony Live is the digital platform of Sony Pictures Network, the official broadcaster of the India-Australia series. Showing such advertisements is a matter of concern in the eyes of experts. However, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has overcome this entire matter. In a conversation with The Indian Express, BCCI treasurer Arun Dhumal said, “We have no information on this.” Let us state that except Sikkim, online sports betting is banned in all states and union territories.

The Advertising Standards Council of India (ASCI) guidelines state that advertising products associated with those banned under the law will not be promoted.

Dhumal said, “It is not the BCCI which has the rights and control to broadcast the series between Australia and India.” This is Cricket Australia. He has rights. As a rule, we can only do something when we are hosting an international match or it comes under our jurisdiction. ‘

However, according to legal experts, online betting from India would be a violation of the country’s gambling and foreign exchange laws. As per Indian law, online sports betting is illegal everywhere except in Sikkim, said sports and gaming advocate Vidushpat Singhania. Vidushpat Singhania was the secretary of the IPL Match Fixing Inquiry Committee headed by Justice Mudgal.

“If a gambling house has online or offline betting and the transaction is done, it will be a violation of the International Transaction Foreign Exchange Management (Current Account Transaction) rules, in addition to the violation of the Gambling Act.”

These websites ask their users for their PAN details and provide them the option of making payments through the net banking facility of almost all major banks. Dafabate also has the option of betting using bitcoin, while Betway has ICICI Bank’s Unified Payments Interface Platform, one of the payment methods.
