UP Cabinet Approves Ordinance Against Conversions For Marriage

The Uttar Pradesh cabinet on Tuesday approved the proposal of anti-illegal conversion law for marriage. State cabinet minister Siddharth Nath Singh informed about this. Cabinet Minister Siddharth Nath Singh informed the media that this decision was taken in a meeting chaired by CM Yogi Adityanath Singh. He said that “In cases of forced mass conversion, the ordinance provides for a jail term of 3-10 years with a fine of Rs 50,000. If a person wants to get married after converting to another religion, then he has to get permission from the DM 2 months before the wedding.

It is said that such conversion will be brought under the category of crime which is being done to bring one person from one religion to another by deceit, fraud, seduction, coercion, or wrongful influence. He said that a provision is being made to put it in the category of non-bailable cognizable offense and to make the trial related to it in the first-class magistrate’s court.

Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath had recently announced a law against alleged ‘love jihad’. The Home Department of Uttar Pradesh had recently sent a proposal to the Law Department to bring a strict law against Love Jihad. Emphasizing the need for strict legislation, Law Minister Brijesh Pathak had told PTI, “There has been an increase in cases in the state which have caused social embarrassment and enmity.” The atmosphere is getting worse due to these cases so a strict law is the need of the hour. ”

The ordinance provides for a jail term of 1-5 years with a fine of Rs 15,000 for conversion. For the conversion of minors and women of the SC / ST community, there will be a jail term of 3-10 years with a fine of Rs 25,000.

UP Minister Mohsin Raza called on the state cabinet to bring an ordinance against forced religious conversion, “We saw that religious conversion were part of the conspiracy for ‘love jihad’.” There is a big conspiracy behind these conversions, which were sorted out by our security agencies. ”

Addressing rallies for the by-elections held in Jaunpur and Deoria last month, Yogi said that his government would bring a law to deal with ‘Love Jihad’. The Allahabad High Court had recently ruled that conversion to marriage cannot be accepted only. Chief Minister Yogi, while welcoming the court’s decision, said that “those who hide names and play with respect for daughters-in-law, if they do not improve, their last visit to the name Ram is going to come out. He had said that posters of people involved in love jihad would be placed at the crossroads.

The home department of UP had already prepared the draft of the proposed law against illegal conversion. The draft was also sent to the legislative department for testing. The word ‘Love Jihad’ is not mentioned in the draft law drafted by the department. This is being called the Unlawful Prohibition Bill.

On Tuesday morning, UP Law Commission Chairman Adityanath Mittal also said that people of two different religions can marry among themselves, but in the new law, the system is about illegal conversion. Justice Adityanath Mittal said that in our report on ‘Love Jihad’, there is a system to stop illegal conversions. Any religious conversion done through misrepresentation or any inducement will be considered illegal and may carry a sentence of up to 3 years.
