The President of the 75th session of the United Nations General Assembly, Volcan Bozkir, announced that Antonio Guterres has been re-appointed as the Secretary-General of the United Nations. His second term will start from January 1, 2022 and end on December 31, 2026. Bojkir administered the oath to 72-year-old Guterres on stage in the hall of the UN General Assembly.

Earlier, a 15-member council meeting on June 8 unanimously adopted a resolution recommending Guterres’ name for the post of Secretary General. The meeting was held in-camera, which was attended by permanent and non-permanent members of the UNSC. India also extended its support for the second term of Antonio Guterres. Late last month, Indian External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar met Antonio Guterres in New York. After this meeting, Jaishankar had tweeted and said that India values ​​the leadership of UNSG in this challenging time. India supports his candidacy for a second term.

Guterres took over as the ninth Secretary-General of the United Nations on January 1, 2017 and his first term ends on December 31 this year. The term of the next Secretary General will start from January 1, 2022. Guterres, the former Prime Minister of Portugal, previously served as the UN High Commissioner for Refugees from June 2005 to December 2015.
