Farm laws stir: Breakthrough as govt accepts two demands of farmers

The sixth round of talks between the central government and farmers ended on Wednesday without any concrete result. Modi government will not withdraw the agricultural laws. However, the government has agreed to two of the four demands of the farmers.

There will be talks again on 4 January from the government. Union Agriculture Minister Narendra Singh Tomar said that four proposals were placed in the talks on behalf of the farmers. Two of these have been agreed upon. The Center agrees to the farmers’ demands on the environmental ordinance. Tomar said that the discussion on the minimum support price (MSP) law will continue. He said that the government is ready to give written assurance on MSP.

The Union Minister said that the MSP will continue. He said that there has also been agreement on the demand related to farmers’ electricity bills. Tomar said that both the parties have agreed on the proposed power legislation, issues related to the burning of stubble. At the same time, the center agrees with the demand of farmers on the issue related to the stubble.

The Union Minister said that a 50 percent agreement has been reached between the farmers and the government on the issues. He said that there are respect and compassion for the farmers in the government. He said that there is hope that there will be an agreement between the farmer and the government. Tomar said that the central government is ready from day one to form the committee.

Earlier, farmer leader Rakesh Singh Tikait tweeted in the midst of the conversation. Tikait wrote in his tweet that talks are going on with the government. Results will be reported to you as soon as possible.

Union leader Kalwant Singh Sandhu said that today’s meeting focused mainly on the issue of burning electricity and stubble. The next meeting will discuss the MSP guarantee and three agricultural laws.
