Bank merger; The government recently merged 8 state-owned banks. If you have accounts in these banks then you will need to make some changes to them. Among the banks to be merged are Vijaya Bank, Corporation Bank, Andhra Bank, Syndicate Bank, Oriental Bank of Commerce, United Bank of India, Allahabad Bank and Dena Bank.3

What will change

Checkbook of banks merged from 1st April will not be valid. You will need to get a new checkbook from the anchor banks (in which other mergers are taking place).

According to the websites of banks, for example, the checkbook of Oriental Bank of Commerce and United Bank of India will be valid till 31 March. Both banks have been merged with Punjab National Bank.

However some banks may give more time to the customers as the Reserve Bank of India has allowed some banks to continue the old checkbook for a quarter or two. For example, Syndicate Bank customers can use their checkbooks till 30 June.

For how long your bank gives you permission to run the checkbook and passbook, for this, you will have to take frequent updates from the bank. If you have given post-dated checks, you will have to replace them with a new one as soon as you get the new checkbook. The IFSC and MICR codes will change for some banks.

If you have taken a loan from the merged banks, the anchor bank will streamline the process. As far as fixed deposits are concerned, banks will not change interest rates. Most of the banks can continue to use the old card till the expiry of the customers, after which the cards of the new bank will be issued.
