Safety is something that is concerning to everybody, no matter which kind of car one buys. Safety plays a crucial role in every segment of vehicles. Also, the recent changes to the Automotive Industry Standards related to driver, passenger and pedestrian safety has forced the automakers to engineer the design of their vehicles accordingly. It is illegal to manufacture a car that does not meet the safety requirements set by the government. Therefore, more and more safety equipment and features are becoming increasingly common in every segment of automobiles.

Tata Altroz
Tata Altroz is the only hatchback in the country to secure a 5-star Global NCAP rating. Altroz costs Rs 5.44 lakh and goes all the way up to Rs 8.95 lakh, ex-showroom. It managed an impressive 16.13 points out of 17 in Adult occupancy and 29 points out of 49 in child occupancy safety. Although the child occupancy score is not so great, the overall scores and safety features as standard qualifies it as a 5-star safety rated car. It comes with features like Dual Airbags, Height Adjustable Seat Belts, Seat Belt Warning, Rear Parking Camera with Sensors, ABS with EBD. The construction of the vehicle is also very solid, owing to a tough structure. All-in-all these factors make it the safest hatchback in the country.

Tata Nexon

Tata Nexon carries a badge of honor for being India’s first 5-star safety rated car. The prices of the Nexon range between Rs 6.99 lakh and Rs 12.70 lakh, ex-showroom. It was tested by the Global NCAP and managed an excellent score of 16.06 out of 17 in Adult Occupant Protection. In the child occupancy protection, it only managed a 3-star rating. However, with features like Child Seat ISOFIX Mounts, Dual Airbags, ABS with EBD and Seat Belt Reminder, it was sufficient to get an overall rating of 5-stars.

Mahindra XUV300
Another indigenous brand, Mahindra got a 5-star safety rating at the Global NCAP for its compact SUV, the XUV300. The Mahindra XUV300 ranges from Rs 7.94 lakh to Rs 12.30, ex-showroom. The scores of XUV300 are impressive, to say the least. It bagged 16.42 points out of 17 for adult occupancy protection. While for the child occupancy it scored a respectable 37.44 points out of 49. It also received Global NCAP’s first-ever Safer Choice Award. The top variant of the XUV300 comes with safety tech like 7 Airbags, Front and Rear Sensors, a Reverse Parking Camera, Electronic Stability Programme, Tyre Pressure Monitoring System, Seat Belt Reminder among others.

Volkswagen Polo
The German carmaker managed to score an impressive 4-star Safety Rating at the Global NCAP. The prices for the Polo start from Rs 5.87 lakh and go all the way up to Rs 9.67 lakh, ex-showroom. It is one of the few hatchbacks to have a score of 4-star. Polo scored 12.54 points out of 17 in adult occupancy protection and 29.91 points out of 49 in child occupancy protection. The safety features like Dual Airbags, ABS, Seat Belt Reminder, and Rear parking sensors come as standard safety equipment in the Polo.

Tata Tiago and Tigor
Tata continues to dominate the safety rating list with two models receiving a 4-star Safety Rating at the Global NCAP. The Tiago costs between Rs 4.70 lakh and Rs 6.74 lakh and Tigor costs Rs 5.38 lakh and Rs 7.48 lakh, ex-showroom. The hatchback Tiago and its extended version, the Tigor, both secured 12.52 points out of 17 in adult occupancy protection. In child occupancy protection, they managed 34.15 points out of 49. The safety features include Dual Airbags, ABS with EBD, Rear Parking Camera with Sensors, Seat Belt Reminder. However, the inclusion of ISOFIX child seat mounts will definitely improve its score even more.

Maruti Suzuki Vitara Brezza
Maruti Suzuki’s safest car in India, the Vitara Brezza secured a 4-star Safety Rating in the Global NCAP testing. The Vitara Brezza costs between Rs 7.34 lakh and Rs 11.34 lakh, ex-showroom. It managed to score 12.51 points out of 17 in Adult occupancy protection. However, it managed only a 2-star rating for child occupancy protection with only 17.93 points out of 49. The safety features on the Vitara Brezza include Dual Airbags, ABS with EBD, Driver Side Seat Belt Reminder, and ISOFIX child seat mounts.

Mahindra Marazzo
Mahindra Marazzo securing a 4-star rating is amazing because of its structure as an MPV. With dual airbags as standard fitment, it gets a 4-star rating for adult occupants and a 2-star rating for child occupants. The latter is where it feels something amiss.

Maruti Suzuki Ertiga
Maruti Suzuki Ertiga is the second safest car from the Gurgaon based manufacturer, scoring 3 stars. It gets 3 stars each for adult and child safety, which technically makes it the safest MPV for kids.

Ford Aspire/Figo
The last and tenth safest car in India is Ford Aspire and Figo, both technically having the same body and platform. Aspire scores a satisfying 3-star safety rating, where 3 stars are for adult safety and 2 stars for child safety. However, its top-end variant gets six airbags which will increase the safety more.

Mahindra Thar
This is the latest entrant in this list and Mahindra’s third safest car out there. The lifestyle SUV and the safest off-roader has scored a 4-star rating for child occupants and even adult occupants. On all the variants, you only get dual front airbags as standard.
